ISSAC NEWTON-SUPERMAN OF SCIENCE
Whenever a list of the world’s greatest men is complied, the name of Isaac Newton is sure to find a place, no matter how small and exclusive the list may be. Everyone acknowledgers that Newton was a great man; yet few have more than the vaguest acquaintance with his living personality. To most of us the mention of his name conjures up a picture of a man lying under an apple tree, watching an apple fall to the ground, and seized by a sudden inspiration, proclaiming the law of universal gravitation. The story on which this picture is based is as mythical as Parson Weems’s tale of Washington and the cherry tree; and it gives a quite misleading impression of Newton as a scientist. His immortal discovery was not the causal offspring a chance incident; it was ripe fruit of years of profound research in mathematical physics.
Nor was Newton’s work in the realm of gravitation his only claim to the gratitude of posterity. He was the first to analyze the spectrum and to reveal the nature and properties of the phenomenon of color. He built the first reflecting telescope, of which the giant 100-inch instrument at Mount Welson is a modern representative. He gave to the world, in the field of pure mathematics, the famous binomial theorem and the differential calculus. Last but not least, he was the father of the corpuscles flying from luminous matter. In this discovery he was more than two hundred years in advance of his time; for the “wave theory” of his contemporary, demonstrated the truth of the corpuscular theory: which was first advanced by Newton in the seventh century.
